Last week I took advantage of a special and replaced my power guzzling tube tv with an energy saving LCD tv.
Did you know that a LCD tv uses only between 10% and 30% of energy as a comparable size CRT or tube...
However, if you replace your 20 inch tube with a 42 inch LCD you won't win any green rewards.
Anyway, as I get ready to pay for my new energy saving entertainment piece I was ask for an extra $25.00 enviro fee. On questioning what that was for the clerk apologized and said, it was for recycling of tvs, computers etc.
Great, I think, remembering an ancient laptop in my basement as well as an inherited unit, all waiting patiently for a save place to be deposited.
So, I inquired where I could recycle my old electronics in our area. She had no idea, neither did anybody else I ask sofar.
I just hope this new electronics enviro fee will not end up padding somebody's pockets while toxic electronics continue to go to the dump or worse into the landscape because, not everybody has a basement or patience.

The Parksville bottle depot (on the Alberni highway by Buckerfields) is now recycling electronics. I don't know if they charge a fee. It is a new service...

There used to be a place in the Comox Valley called CompuCycle, which would repair and recycle old computers and then donate them to worthy causes. A lot of nonprofit societies in the area benefitted from this service -- it kept computers out of the landfill, and helped nonprofit societies and individuals who couldn't afford to buy electronic equipment.

Sadly, they closed their doors this summer, and are no longer offering this service. From what I understand, a new province-wide program focuses on recycling, rather than reusing, and so the government funds which once went to supporting CompuCycle's initiative have now been diverted to the EWaste program.
To quote their website:
700,000 lbs of toxic electronic waste have been diverted from our land fills, hundreds of organizations have received assistance benefiting hundreds of their clients, and in addition hundreds of individuals have received systems for their homes to support education, training, business and social goals. The impacts of this program are obviously far reaching and the impacts of the loss will be far reaching as well.
It's disappointing, but I'm hopeful that their successful venture will return, with a little community help and some pressure on a government which, one hopes, would support such a worthwhile cause.
