Greetings -- I have been on the island about a year now, and am trying to re-start my perpetual local food project, i.e. kitchen gardening. I have got some backyard space (in Nanaimo) and could do with some pointers from locals -- where to find organic manure (chicken, horse, rabbit, whatever)? where to buy straw in bales? where to get topsoil that is not the scrape-off from some industrial site?

the indoor worm bin is already thriving in the basement, and I'm reading seed catalogues; but am not sure when the wise planting dates are for this area, when last risk of frost is past, and so on.

I had hoped that this forum might provide advice from experienced local organic veggie gardeners... but since the last post is 18 months ago, I fear it may have withered and died. is anyone out there?

This is my first time back to the site in many, many months -- I was curious to see if the conversations had picked up at all. And lo, I find a single lonely voice in the Organic Gardening section... hi, Rootless!

I'm getting ready to start my garden, too, but as I live in the Comox Valley area, I don't have any suggestions for places to go for organic manure and topsoil in Nanaimo. However, I thought I'd let you know about Seedy Saturday, which is happening on Saturday, March 7th in Courtenay. Here's the link for more info:

Although I'm faaaaaaaar from experienced (I've only had a garden for a few years), we tend to start planting in mid- to late March, and we've been very successful. Of course, this year has been much colder than normal...

Happy planting!
